A female patient has escaped from a Massachusetts federal mental institition. Before she fled she left some encoded clues about mind control, eugenics and CIA drug trials. The investigating officers fear that they have stumbled into something far more dangerous than the usual missing person scenario.

I wish I read this before seeing the movie.

I've read a few of this author's books and enjoyed them all, but I found Shutter Island to be the most suspenseful and poignant, even having seen the movie previously. I wish I'd been able to read it without knowing the ending (and without seeing DiCaprio's face the whole time), might have been a totally different experience.
