Steven Rowley: The Guncle (Hardcover, 2021, G.P. Putnam's Sons)

The Guncle charms and heals

Patrick could have easily turned in to a caricature of a gay white man, but each Guncle Rule pulls out more humanity and connection. The kids were well developed and acted appropriately for young children who are unexpectedly taken in by G.U.P. It’s sweet, sassy, emotional, and uplifting. Sometimes we need to get tossed out of our comfort zones to see what we haven’t lost and what we can gain.

A down-on-his-luck Broadway playwright is marooned in rural Illinois in this sharply funny queer rom-com

None

It’s a very sweet rom-com about second acts and second chances. It’s does what it says on the tin, but the characters are lovable. No it won’t challenge you, and <spoiler>most of the beats are pretty telegraphed</spoiler>. Still, it grabbed my heart on the end.
