With each Malazan books, Erikson's skill as a writer visibly improves. This book was enjoyable almost all the way through. The first 200-300 pages could have been compressed. I could also have done without all the rape. Need backstory to show female character has overcome some bad shit: rape! Need to show someone is evil: rape! It's tiresome. Except for that rather major flaw it's enjoyable fantasy.
